After it failed did you reboot??
Could be caused by a whole range of problems.
First thing I'd do is make sure it is not the ISP. See if you can manually ring their number (take the line out of the back of the computer, plug it into a phone) & see if it rings through. If it is engaged then it is probably a fault with your ISP.
