basically it lets you know if there is impending hard-drive failure...

I leave mine on all teh time..

if it says imminent failure it allows you time to migrate data from one storage device to another...

you set it in the BIOS, but I wouldn't just totally rely on S.M.A.R.T. to tell you your drive is going to fail.

it's been telling me for 5 month's 1 of my raid array drives was on it's way out...

funny thing happend this morning (right b4 i was going to make a backup *cough* )

it died
