Harddrive Noise...Please Help!

Recently, one or both of my harddrives I am not sure which, has been making noise. It is kind of like a whir, then a pause, then another whir, and so on for a short while. It will then stop for awhile, then start up again for no apparent reason. I then decided to shutdown my computer and see if that helped. Well, when WindowsXP was loading, nothing appeared on my screen and turned it off completely. Then I booted into safemode successfully and then I tried getting back into Windows and here I am. Now, one, I would like to know if anyone knows why this is happening and if I should be prepared for complete harddrive failure anytime soon. And two, I cannot seem to locate Scandisk in my start menu, and I don't see it in my Win dir but it might be there somewhere. Can someone point me in the right direction please? Thanks so much.

Yep that sounds like a death scream. Make a backup ASAP.

Scandisk isn't in XP as far as I know. Open up the console and run:
sfc /SCANNOW
or
chkdsk /F

Run both to make sure.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
