Hard Drive Usage

I don’t think it’s hardware related but I wasn’t sure where else this would fit. The problem a friend is having is that when he right clicks on the HDD and looks at the pie chart showing the free space it says he has used 6Gb with 1Gb remaining

Thinking this was a tad large he selected all his files on the C drive and it came to just over 3Gb. So why is Windows reporting the large usage and where has the rest of his space gone? We also checked his D drive and the usage was reported correctly.

Thanks in advance,

check the following things:

  • the size of your swapfile (control panel -> system -> performance -> advanced)
  • the size of the system recovery files (control panel -> system -> system recovery)
  • the size of the file windows uses to hibernate (hiber something something in your root c🙂 You can adjust the HD space used to hibernate in Power Options in control panel.

I hope I got all the clicks right coz I'm on a NT4 box right now...
