half life counterstrike

having just installed XP pro, does Half life/Counter Strike work on the platform? When I try to install half life, nothing runs.
Secondly, being new to the game, do I need to install Half life to run CS?

you need to install a retail version of CS or HL inorder to use a patch

Half-life ruins fine under XP, I don't know whether the older versions of it will, try using the auto-updater and obtaining the latest version...

Also, generally under WindowsXP you will not be able to play in OpenGL without updating your graphics drivers from teh standard ones....

Once you have Half-life running ok, you can go to http://www.counter-strike.net and get your free version of Counter-strike 😉
