H.264 .mov only HD?

I was wondering if H.264 is the only HD media on the computer. All the podcasts that I watch only have the HD version in h.264. Is that because it's only that or because they choose. I like to download and have .avi in xvid, but if I want HD I have to download stupid .mov files.

HD content comes in other formats. I think most people use H.264 because it gives really good compression and great quality to size ratio. :) Oh and most H.264 files will come as .mkv files.

Theres H.264/AVC/MPEG-4, VC-1, MPEG-2, xvid, divx, etc, but the first 3 are the ones most often used. And yes, most high-def content either comes in m2ts, ts, or mkv containers.

That sucks, well not really.

I watch like 5 or so podcasts from Revision 3 and they all use h.264 (.mov) and I don't know, everything else that I use and play are in xvid (.avi) and I really enjoy that.

mkv containers? No, most of them will be in mpeg4 containers.

Code:
WideLoad:Movies xistence$ file Equilibrium.mp4
Equilibrium.mp4: ISO Media, MPEG v4 system, version 2
WideLoad:Movies xistence$ file Gorgeous.mp4
Gorgeous.mp4: ISO Media, MPEG v4 system, version 2
WideLoad:Movies xistence$ file Mr\ and\ Mrs\ Smith.mp4
Mr and Mrs Smith.mp4: ISO Media, MPEG v4 system, version 2

Those movies are all encoded as H.264. MKV is a relatively new container http://www.matroska.org/.

It is the open source version of the mpeg4 container and mostly contains the same sort of features. The files downloaded from the iTunes store for example (the movies) are h.264 encoded movies in an mpeg4 container. All songs downloaded from iTunes are in an mpeg4 container as well.

Code:
WideLoad:Crazy Hits xistence$ file 02\ Axel\ F.m4p
02 Axel F.m4p: ISO Media, MPEG v4 system, iTunes AAC-LC

Matroska is trying to replace Xvid/DivX/mpeg4.

Newer video cards have built-in H.264 decoding, making HD playback all the more smoother, and since QuickTime 7 is fairly ubiquitous, it is probably a safe bet for those looking to cast to a large audience.

i use x264/mkv for all my backups :) - using MeGUI from doom9.org, it does other formats too and has many different profiles

Matroska is not yet supported by many players. VLC and mplayer just recently added support. mpeg4 with h264 has been fully supported in players for a while now.

true but they are talking with peeps to make hardware players, so they say on their site, or was that on coreavc site - it was one of them, and seeing as i have the pc set as a HTPC im in a win win situation atm :)

Answer me this then, why are there always tons of different formats in everything this world has to offer.

(not really looking for an answer lol)

choice mainly, matroksa is the only container that will handle anything that you throw at it, it was designed that way :)

bear in mind that the h.264 format can come in many varients, .mov sorenson, flash. and most codecs will play within vlc. or bsplayer. There is also h.268, but i can't find any info on that at all, i believe it is a specific hd format.

Other options for HD compression include, flash, wmv, mpeg4. and by the way the new wmv9 advanced profile is almost as good if not better than h264.

i didn't say it was.... i said it was another form that HD can come in.
