Since I can't find any other reference to it yet on the forums, I was wondering if anyone had tried the new google desktop search (http://www.desktop.google.com/) yet and what their impressions about it were.

That looks absolutely awesome. :D
I'm going to have to try it this weekend when the work clears up.

It's still a beta. I'm sure Google will add more features eventually. :)

Trying it out now.

Isn't this what Windows indexing does? But is just a useless feature anyway?

not a virus but I thought this was interesting at least - http://virusscan.jotti.dhs.org/
File: GoogleDesktopSearchSetup.exe
Status:
MIGHT BE INFECTED/MALWARE (Sandbox emulation took a long time and/or runtime packers were found, this is suspicious. Normally programs aren't packed and don't force the sandbox into lengthy emulation. Do realize no scanner issued any warning, the file can very well be harmless. Caution is advised, however.)

Another limitation: seems that it doesn't let you install to a drive other than the default primary partition.. I emailed google about this but have not yet heard back from them.

It also has problems with the Microsoft ISA Server's firewall client -- not that most people at home would be running an ISA server or running the included Firewall client... but here at work we are.

Here's a list (and some workarounds) of programs that have problems with the google desktop. I have a couple of these running and as such, have not yet had a chance to install it.. :(

Well, it goes WAY beyond what the windows indexing does. Even with the indexing service turned on, doing a search using the windows/find function still takes time. This is supposed to be a lot quicker.

Beyond that, it also will search Outlook/Outlook express folders as well as AIM conversations, IE webpage view history..

This and Ava Find make a killer combo together (been using the latter for a while now - highly recommended). :)
Google Desktop can search for terms within documents and emails, and Ava Find can find any file on your hard drive instantaneously.

I sent them a little feedback about Firefox support and very quickly they replied ...

Thank you for your note. Google Desktop Search is only partially
compatible with Mozilla Firefox. If you install Desktop Search and open a
Firefox browser window, you'll see a 'Desktop' link appear on the Google
homepage. You can click this link to go to the Desktop Search homepage
whenever you want to search with Desktop Search.

Web pages which you view in Firefox aren't added to your Desktop Search
index, however, so you won't be able to find them with Desktop Search.

We realize that many of our users use Mozilla Firefox as their primary
browser, and we may consider adding increased Firefox support in a future
version of Desktop Search.

The Google Team

Desktop search seemd to modify the default browser settings. It should
just allow people who are using alternative browsers such as Firefox to
use Firefox straight out of the box instead of changing our browser
settings, if IE is not required to fully utilize the features of Desktop
Search.

Well, this confirms that you can't install it to a different drive other than the program files directory..

Thank you for your note. At the moment, Google Desktop Search is set up to
install only into your Program Files directory. For most users, your
Program Files directory is located on your c:\ drive. We do not currently
offer a way to adjust this setting. We realize that installing in an
alternate location might be convenient in some situations, and may
consider adding this in the future.

I installed it last night but haven't had a chance to use it as of yet.... I don't use IE as my browser, so of course it's not going to be able to search through my history, but that's ok by me.
