Gearsec.exe service

Well I've got no idea where this came from but I know a saw a post on a forum somewhere that said how to get rid of it and no I don't remember where so I thought I would ask you nice friendly helpful and knowledgeable folks about.

It runs at system start and I can seem to find the service or whatever in any place in Windows 2000 Pro with SP4. I would like to know what it is and/or does and if possible how to get rid of it

The service is part of iTunes. It enables the CD-burning features. If you don't use iTunes, you can disable it in services.msc. The service is called "Gear Security Service"

Gearsec is used by iTunes for burning and ripping. I'm not sure if it's used for anything else, but I've disable it with no negative consequences (other than iTunes complaining it can't burn or rip).

cool. Now if I could figure out I did to trash my install that my control panel applets will not work now

Thanks to both Netryder and Mr. K for the info and I solved my control panel issue not sure what I did to start with but I guess I undid it and it works now
