Game Keeps Crashing

My PC runs fine with no problems whatsoever, but whenever I try to play Medal of Honour Pacific Assault or Doom 3 the game either crashes or the window just shuts down altogether. My PC meets the requirements for the games as my system is as follows: -

Windows XP Pro SP2
Epox 8RDA+ Motherboard
Athlon 2500+ CPU
2 x 512Mb PC3200 (PC400) DDR Memory
ATI Radeon 9200

I did originally have my memory installed in DIMMs 1 & 3, but changed this as the manual says they should be in DIMMs 2 & 3 for 2 sticks of 64-bit memory, however the outcome is still the same. Can putting my memory in the wrong DIMMs have damaged my motherboard? I have run Memtest86 on each memory stick and no errors were seen.

Event viewer does have events for when the game crashes, but there is no description to the event, which doesn't help much.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Are you getting a BSOD or is it just rebooting on you? If the later then you should disable "reboot on error" or however it's worded. Then take and copy down the important looking stuff from the BSOD and post it here. :)

Neither. When I was running Medal of Honour Pacific Assault the game just crashed and I ended up having to reboot, so I swapped the game for Doom 3. Now when I run Doom 3 the game loads up ok and runs really slow for say 20 seconds and then the window just closes, however I can then just use my pc ok with no problems.

No errors of any kind? Just a crash to desktop? Are you running the latest version? Also what drivers are you running from ATi?

The latest version of what? I have the latest version of the ATI driver and Windows updates.

It has been suggested to me that I install another version of windows and try that to see if it makes any difference, so I might try that tonight when I get home.

What told you to try another version of Windows? I think it's most likely a drivers problem. Myself with that old a card (you have 9200 like above right?) I would use older set of drivers instead of the newest ones on ATi's site as I think they are more geared toward newer cards. Hopefully somoene else can stop in here that has an older ATi card and can recommend a good stable set of drivers for you.

The most trouble free radeon I ever used was 3.1 it took until 3.7 until I got the next one I liked. Try one of those. The draw back is I don't think the openGL support was very good until 3.10 so if you have troubles in openGL games with 3.1 or 3.7 try the 3.10

PS Install another version of winodws??? ROFLMFAO. Unless they meant roll back to SP1 from SP2. That is good advise for gaming. I refuse to put SP2 on my gaming machine. Too many horror stories. I'll wait for SP2a.

Whats wrong w/ SP2 and gaming? I game on my XP box fine w/ SP2, changed nothing.

i had a similar problem with my ATI 9600XT.
the computer would just shut right off.

i used OMEGA drivers and that cleared up the problem. i believe it had something to do with FASTWRITE. try shutting that off.

I think they meant install another copy of windows to see if the problem windows related.

How do I change the setting for FASTWRITE?

it works....

But anyway. Stick with XP SP2 on pain of death. anyone not using it now is just plain stupid.

Most Radeon cards are unstable with fastwrites enabled (there are one or two models that need it on however - its quite confusing. The 9200 however requires it to be off) This can be disabled ni the bios - usually advanced chipset settings but it varies from board to board so look around.

ATI's best OpenGL drivers were 4.10 and 4.12 so try using those cat's.

Beyond that.. not a clue.

Thanks LordOfLA I'll try turning fastwrite and see if it makes any difference although Halflife 2 worked fine on my PC. Maybe its the driver like you say.

Sounds like a really weird problem.

Overall D3 is a more demanding game than HL2 if you leave the dynamic shadows on but I am assuming you have them turned off when you are playing with that card to get any purchase in the game.

If possible, if there is any sort of message or error script that pops up, please list that down as well as any other details you can think of.

Also is this reproduced in any other games/applications you play other than the ones you have listed?

I used to get a similar problem with COD, basically only at one point in the game and I never figured it out. When I got my nv40 it went away so I had a feeling it was card related but I could never put my finger on it.

This is the event that I am seeing when the game window closes. This only happens with MOHPA & D3.

Ahhh yes... It's all clear to me now... After reading that error code, your problem is... ^$@#@^& 5e f9 92 ea I2 75 f5 ^&@@^%

I'd suggest using the Omega Drivers as someone stated before. It might clear up your problem. If not, then you can give something else a try. Oh and when you install newer drivers from ATI, do you uninstall the previous ones?

This little problem now appears to be fixed. Fast writes is still enabled and the ATI driver I'm currently using is version 6.14.10.6462 (23/3/04). The only thing I saw was that the graphics card has the option for split screen (screen 1 & 2) and the second screen was using a different driver. I uninstalled this and after a reload it started using the same driver as sceen 1. Doom 3 now runs perfect, so now I'll have to go out and buy MOHPA again. Thanks for all your help.

After reading this thread now KotoR is having issues for me. :p It crashes to desktop after I abuse the game a bit (ie load/reload thing quickly, repeatedly). I'm not sure if it's drivers or just a bug caused by abusing it. I am running the 4.8 cats so perhaps I'll just upgrade to 4.10/12 when I'm feeling unlazy.

Anyhoo glad to hear your issue was solved wigan_ukmale. :)

Glad to hear it worked out for you wigan_ukmale.
happy gaming :)

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?

Impressed you have kept this alive this long EP! So many sites have come and gone. :(

Just did some crude math and I apparently joined almost 18yrs ago, how is that possible???
