FTP Server

Just got news that I'm likely to be setting up an FTP server for one of my neighbors shortly. ATM i have no idea of his set up. It's either going to be a separate box on a lan, or run on the main pc. either way we're probably just going to be dealing with windows.

the guy just wants to be able to let friends dl his music files, he's a dj, custom tracks and re-mixes and such.

this isn't something I've done before, so i thought i'd ask:

1. Preferred FTP server prog for ease of setup and maintainence

2.... i dunno. any thing I should look out for?

just found out the guy is running random rev of Longhorn...heh. I might get to tell him "Unfortunately I cannot support your operating system, please refer all compatibilty issues to your vendor."

Operating System options??

Windows: No idea
FreeBSD: pure-ftpd
linux: prob pure-ftpd again

For Windows, you can use the FileZilla FTPd, or something very easy to use like GuildFTPd, or if you want to go even simpler, you can use the daemon included in IIS.

Yeah I would strongly advise against running a FTP server on a very alpha OS.

Well, I'd advise against running a pre-alpha operating system... but if they're already doing so, why not slap an FTPd on top?

Just like to put my vote to agree with Speedy_B on filezilla, pretty easy, free, and HEY, it ends in ZILLA, can it be bad?

I use Bulletproof FTP Server, or EFTP. I've also heard RaidenFTPD is pretty nice.
Bulletproof and Raidon cost about $20-$30 and EFTP is free.

I currently use Bulletproof FTP and have used it for years. But I have a friend who loves EFTP, and know people that use Raiden. So who knows.

I must strongly advise a different OS. Using an Alpha of an operating system puts him at an extreme risk.

And one thing you should do, is definitely assign accounts. Not use a general account for new people. I found that my FTP server wound up on a few Warez/FTP download sites. I was wondering why I had so many connections. I elliminated that account needless to say and started designating accounts more.

I run Serv-U Ftp ... and Dynamic DNS + I port forward. All works seemlessly.

Bulletproof for Windows (released versions anyway).

You can set it up with for single or group user accounts, passwords, limited logins etc in 5 minutes. Easy control over user permissions on the shared directory.

Has some good anti-hack protections built in also.
