OpenOffice.org can directly save documents as PDF files. It's a free open-source Office suite that contains apps comparable to Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc. It can also open and save files in the Microsoft Office formats. Give it a try. See if you like it. http://www.openoffice.org
If you're looking for a standalone PDF converter, try searching Google for "Free PDF writer" It came up with a lot of results, but I can't recommend any particular one, since I've never used any of them.
No, both can be installed on the same machine.
Just make sure you don't associate .doc, .xls and .ppt files with OpenOffice.org during setup unless you want it to open these files.
