According to myfico.com, checking your credit score DOES NOT lower your credit score.. The only types of inquiries that lower your scores are ones made by your request as though you're trying to get credit. Checking your score or companies pulling your credit report to see if you pre-qualify for something don't effect your score.

If you are dealing with a company that will allow you to request a copy of your credit report and give it to them I recommend you do. Some apartment complexes and such will do this. Just one less inquiry. My credit is shot so it doesn't really matter to me... but I work for a debt negotiation company and I am located in a state that does not allow garnishments, so I am gonna take care of it all.
