My main and only HD (160 GB SATA) shows as removable in Safely Remove hardware ICON. Any idea how it got there and how to get it out?

And no, I'm not crazy enough to try clicking on it and slecting Stop.

I replaced a VIA MB with an Nforce without a reinstall and this is the only problem I have been able to find. Weird.

To find your dead and gone devices restart in safe mode, open device manager, enable showing hidden devices.

Or just look through your registry. Every device that you ever connect is in the HKLM\System\

Check your Control sets. They will be there, bloating your registry.

That is by design for hot swapping drives but this would for the most part be used by servers or people with raided drives.

Instead of disabling this feature I just hide the icon.

You can also just open a command prompt within normal Windows and enter:

set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1

Then enter: start devmgmt.msc

Go to the top of device manager and select view > show hidden devices

Yeah, but that would be easy.

SATA drives are supposed to show up in "Safely remove devices" on controllers that support hot-swap SATA :)

Ok, great. The old MB did not show the SATA as removable so the change scared me.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
