Formatting Expired XP

I used XP on a computer for 30 days but didn't activate it. I want to format itto put on Win98 but when i boot into MS-Dos it says i cant format from dos. Then I bootup into safe mode with MS-Dos but it says my volume is unmountable and it wont let me format. Anyone know how to format it?

Try using the xp cd at bootup to format only. What file system are you using?

It is Fat32. It is a pretty old harddrive but i dont know if that's relevant or not.
