floppy drive reformat??

Help - I am confused. I have several 3.5 disks that I previously formatted so I could take pictures in my camera. When I put the disk back into the drive so I could view the pictures, it tells me the disk is not formatted. This has also happened on text files from word as well. When we had Windows 98SE, I could just pop the disk in and it read it just fine, but with XP, it refused to open them. Can anyone tell me what the problem is?

are you sure you're not removing the floppy drive before the little green (or whatever color) light goes out?

Yes. The problem is that when I put it in the drive to pull up the pictures (it doesn't matter what graphics program I use) it tells me the disk in not formatted, do I want to format it now. When I formatted the disks, I make sure the lights are off before I remove them. And like I mentioned, I have only had this problem with Windows XP.

hmm... to tell you the truth, i'm completely stumped. maybe it's something wrong with the disk itself.

I thought of that, but this has happened to just about every disk we insert. I am so baffled. I thought it could be the disk drive, but sometimes when you insert it and try to access something you saved to disk (which you can do with no problem) it says the same thing when you try to open it up again in the same program, usually Word. Sometimes I can work around this by trying to access it in My Computer. I was wondering if XP formats their disks differently????

get a new drive.. alot of the time their heads get all out of line and there isnt any way you can fix it. They cost like a few dollars so no big loss. Also get a pack of new floppies. Putting old screwed up floppies into a drive can mess it up bad. Doing these two things and you should be ok :0)

sounds like the floppy drive is going south. they can become damaged without you knowing it. also may need to be cleaned due to dust or dirt. just for the heck with it you may try one of the floppy drive cleaners.

I just replaced the floppy drive with a brand new one in August. I may have to return it.

Thank you all for your help. I appreciate the response. I will try a new one and see if that helps.

I think it may not be the drive, I have the same problem. I've tried two different drives. it only happens to about half of my discs though

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
