external harddrive confusion

I am considering adding an external harddrive to my laptop. It will be used for storing image copies of my laptop harddrive, archival data and digital photographs.

Thus far all my research has left me very confused as to whether I should get a USB 2.0 (which would mean I'd have to get an adaptor - more expense) or FireWire (my laptop has a FireWire port but there is some concern that it is only rated for only 100mbps).

So:
1) which is faster USB 2.0 or FireWire?
2) what is a good external drive (would like it to be 120GB or better): Maxtor, Iomega, or whatever (price under $300 preferably.)

All opinions are welcome, thanks..

USB 2.0 is faster I think. If you have Firewire go with that. No need for messing around with an adaptor. Firewire is 400Mbit acctually.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
