External DVD -/+ RW

I am trying to backup some dvd's but however I can't. I am using a I/O Magic 8x dual format DVDRW 1008 with an bytecc external case. I am running WinXP SP2. It's not recognizing the blank dvd? What am I doing wrong?

do you see the drive in my computer?

If yes, then maybe try a different aspi layer (adaptec's 4.60 tends to be the most stable)

mmmmmmmmmm............ Try and update your Drivers mate. Also, what are you burning with. (i mean what program, roxio, nero, what?)

I'm using DVDShrink to re author and then using Nero 6.6 Reloaded.

I can view DVD but can't burn DVD. In My Computer it shows up as a DVD-RW however when I put in a Blank DVD-R or DVD+R it changes over to CD-ROM and a little "DVD-R" on the Drive Icon. The drive I have is I/O Magic 8x -/+ R/RW drive model IDE1008 and is installed in a Bytecc USB 2.0 IDE enclosure.

Look in the Bytecc case to see if there is a switch to select between HDD's and ATAPI devices...

Did you update aspi?

Do you think its the media? I can burn CD's without a problem.

It could be the media. You could popp the burner into your PC case and see if it burns the blanks in there.

Also check your settings for burn speed. Try 2.4x or slower. You could be trying to brun faster than the USB interface can support. Or faster than the medioa can support.


Google for a copy of "DVD Identifier" to read the media and drives.

I have tried Prodisc, Memorex, and Imation.

You need to use DVDidentifier or another similar program to see who actually makes the disc. Those could all concievably be the same media.
