explorer memory problem

I'm having a memory leak issue with explorer and I have no idea what to do about it. Explorer seems to be draining my memory whenever I open it. I also reformatted and I have the same problem. I also have an .avi file that I can't move. winxp is saying that it's being in use but it's not. What the hell is going on?

When you right-click the avi file XP scans the avi file looking for information this can take a lot of time, hence the info "This file is in use, try this:-
1. Open up regedit
2. Goto
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler
3. Delete the "Default" value which should be
"{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}"

Also what may be happening is that you are using a P2P programme and somebody is uploading the file from you. If this is the case just completely close the P2P programme.

i don't want to get my hopes up too high... but DAMN I think that might have fixed it. would you care to explain further on what this did? So far right now I've been able to play avi files and use explorer and no unsual behavior.

The number that you removed from the registry was pointing to a file called "shmedia.dll". This file for whatever reason scans the whole avi file looking for property information, if the file is large the scan takes a long time. The removal of the number prevents shmedia.dll from scanning the Avi files.
