i'm going to purchase one for someone with a laptop. i'm curious if anyone has any advice to give that i might otherwise not take into consideration until it's too late. anything i should know about these things.

requirements:
- must be firewire
- 3.5", not 2.5" or 5.25"
- fanless is a big plus
- must stand vertically
- not expensive (ie. no more than $60)
- oh, and empty :) (if the previous bullet didn't give that away)

some general questions:
- will the harddrive automatically spin down when the computer is turned off? is that possible over a firewire interface?
- the ones with fans; are they always on, just when the comp is on, or temperature controlled?

some i've eyeballed:
- Bytecc ME-350F
- Argosy HD-360C
- Coolmax CD-309-FW

and, of course, i'm open to other brands and models. thanks, guys. :)

On your spin down question ..... an external USB 2 connected caddy does not spin down until its own individual power is shut down , rather than the general system itself.
Probably same principal for firewire.

you're right, it is probably the same. thanks for that.

I think it should spin down when the computer is shut off or if its unplugged. Makes more sense to me.

it does, indeed. but it's not something that the operating system would tell it to do upon shutdown. and that's only if the external will accept some kind of 'spin-down' command. probably not made to.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
