error codes downloding for windows media player 9

I'm trying to view a big avi file and it teels me that's it cannot download the codec for the avi. It says "error downloading codec. I have the new player 9 but not sure whatelse I have to download?

You may want to try DIVX

There are quite a few codecs that the file might use besides DivX. One that I have been seeing frequently lately is the XVid codec. Media Player won't download many of the codecs that you might need, so my suggestion is that you go to an A/V website and get codecs from there. Get VirtualDub if you don't have it, and it will let you know exactly what codec is needed to play the file. Here are a few links that you might find helpful:
