Enabling "Smart" hard drives.

I have an EPOX 8KHA+, New IBM and Maxtor drivers that both support the smart function. Smart has been enabled on both drives using the disk manufactures utilities however when the system boots no mention is made (BIOS) that the smart function has been enabled, also I can’t locate any mention of this in the BIOS set-up screens

Why is this?
