Running Vista 32 bit. Have deactivated UAC and trying to edit the Hosts files located in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc. I'm using notepad to make the changes. When I try to save, I get a message "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts file. Make sure that the path and file name are correct. " When I try to save in a different location, notepad only allows me to save as .txt? Is there some way to save as per original file extension?

The host file is a txt file, per-se. Using a notepad and saving it with out changing the ext on it will allow you to save it.

This will also make it invalid and the backup copy will be moved in.

Right click it and change permissions on your account to allow full control.

If you right click on it and select edit. Then just save it, it will save as default. The point I was trying to make.

What you have to do is open Notepad first, as administrator. Go to the start menu, type in "notepad" in the search box and it should display Notepad in the top section. Right-click on the icon for Notepad, choose "run as administrator". Once you have it open that way, go to File, Open and browse to the hosts file.

There may be an easier way, but that's the only way I've been able to do it.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
