I had a simular problem after replacing a cd writer by a NEC 3500 DVD writer.
All registry changes don't work or are just temporary fixes.
Try this.
- Remove (uninstall) software and drivers that emulate cd or dvd players.
- Remove the drive from windows (controp panel/system/hardware/Devicemanager)
- Reboot your computer
- If you can boot from CD, disable this in the BIOS (generally in the advanced chipset features)
- start Windows in save mode (press F8 during startup)
- Use the administrator account
Windows will detect all new hardware, but it does not give you any information about this.
- Check "My comuter" if the drives are present again.
- Reboot as you normally do
- if you wish: (re)install the cd/dvd emulator software and drivers.
- Do NOT turn the "Boot from CD" option on again in the BIOS, unless you realy, realy need to.
This worked fine by me and after a few days and several reboots both my DVD-player and the new DVD writer are still present in Windows.
If this still does not work, condider a fresh Windows install.
