Dvd drive failure

My friend has a compaq presario laptop and his dvd drive just stopped running dvds...he can run cds which is the weird thing. I've looked at every download possible and I can't get anything to work. He took it in where he bought and they told him it was a OS problem. Just wondering if anyone can help. Thanks a lot.
