Alright gang, here's my problem. I have a Sony DRU-720A and am having a problem with it making a bunch of coasters. I have plenty of these from the "old days" of 4x burners...cd wise. It works from time to time. Sometimes Nero (older versions as well as the current) works, that's usually a 50/50 thing. I also use Clone DVD 2 for copying dvd's (for back up *snicker*). That usually has no problem at all, but from time to time has it's issues. The drive doesn't have a favorite freak out point either, it'll quit at various stages. What it does is you can hear it spinning and starting up, then rev down, then back up for about 20 sec, then back down, then back up...no here is where I'd say 25% of the time it'll hose out. Otherwise it'll go about 33% to 66% of the writing process and then simply stop. The burning programs tell me that it was a bad write error...duh. Any ideas and suggestions that do not require me to either toss it, shoot it, or buy another?

BTW sorry for the bold, it started it and I can't get it to quit.

Incompatible media.

Some of the early DVD burners were very finicky about the blanks they would use. Ricoh was the best I ever found but hard to find in the USA. I generally use TDK now. The faster the blanks you buy the more likely a problem. Check out cdfreaks.com for media recommendations.

buy a new one. should be around $20- $50 for a good one by LG, NEC or Lite-On

The blanks that I'm using is the Memorex 16x DVD+R as well as the DVD-R. I've tried a bunch of different brands and these seem to have the least issues for me.....until now that is....
Also I just ran Sony's Drive Check v2.01 and it stopped at the read phase after the burn....and I can't submit the info for some dumb reason. Oh well...GOnna try out the TDK's prolly tomorrow.

run dvdinfo on the new blanks and the old (working) blanks. The big names buy whatever **** is cheapest and stick their name on it. The worst is Fuji who were discovered with 3 different makes of blank in a 100 DVD spindle a while back.

Check to make sure the IDE channel the burner is on is set to use UDMA mode 2.

First off, nice quote Dream....secondly...call it a brain fart but where and how do I check that? udma that is...

Edit: Here's what I got when trying to burn a movie for my wife...
This is with about 20% of the movie written. I posted where the error occured.

Get to computer management, expand IDE/ATA/ATAPI then right click the IDE channel the drive is on and select properties then advanced settings tab.

I had the same problem “I think same error also” with three Sony RETAIL drives all in a two week period last fall. The drives were only about 4 months old. I replaced the drives with LG on one system and Sony OEM from newegg on the other two and haven’t had the error’s come back or any problems with the drives.

I went through all the trouble shooting, replacing cables and running Sony’s drive check software too and in the end replacing the drives solved the problem.

I can't find the UDMA anywhere....When looking at the properties which tab should it be on? (General, properties, dvd region, volumes, driver, details)
ALSO, it's not in the IDE ATA/ATAPI section its in DVD/CD-Rom drives where I'm assuming it should be...

The Lake House was the last one, Superman Returns prior to that, Face Off, etc...

Umm, not exactly...like I said before "backups *snicker*" But that's besides the point.

Not really. Each newer DVD release has features built in that produce more coasters. It may not be your media or burner.

Thats why I asked because the new release's make great coasters ...

They were downloads. As in not the screener dvd's but some guy and his trusty camera. The files are generally in VCD format with some exceptions.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
