Dumb question.. page file?

I use system mechanic and one of the options is to clear page file on shut down.. what is this file and is this safe??

I am not sure if there is any real advantage, just means you have a nice clean swap page/swap file when you boot up.
Could be cleared for security issues etc.
Its should be pretty safe.
