Hey all. Does anybody know of any good, free, FAST Defraggers that I can download off of the internet for Windows XP?

Thanks!

Use the built in defrag... It will get faster and faster the more you use it. The first few times will take some time, be patient.

Free? Try the built-in defragmenter - you get what you pay for :)

Fast? Not the built-in defragmenter. To get speed and the ability to defragment files that the built-in defragmenter can't, ability to defragment when low free space, etc... you'll have to look elsewhere than the built-in defragmenter (which means 3rd party - which means that it will cost a little bit).

The big decision for you is whether what you get for free is going to meet your expectations. If not....

Well the thing is I used to have one for Windows 98, and i noticed a HUGE difference in the speed of that one compared to the built in one. Same goes for Windows XP, the built in one is just slow as hell. =( VERY slow. I tried my Norton Utilities one, and I dont think that is any better.

Like i said, it will get faster and faster. I have Diskeeper 7 and it took a long time the first 4 or 5 times. I now have it set to run every 8 hours and it starts and finishes in about 30-60 seconds.

Avoid third party defraggers that aren't compliment with XP's built-in optimization cycle (such as Norton's Speed Disk). If you use one that doesn't compliment it, you'll get a lot of disk activity and reduced performance because XP will be putting stuff back where it wants it. I suggest either using the built-in defrag utility, or getting a copy of Diskeeper (the built-in is actually a bargain basement version of Diskeeper). I'm not positive, but i think Exectutive Software has a trial version of Diskeeper 7 that you could get to at least do the bulk of your defragging with and then revert back to the built in one.

Goto Direct Connection Download thier software. Make sure you have something to share. Download any software you want (This is a TRUE Peer to Peer Download service). Myself after hearing Lonmans success with Diskkeeper i got that program. When i saw how good a job it did i went and bought it when i could afford it. (Yes i am suggesting Warez But My Rule is if ya Like it Buy it when you can otherwise play with it then uninstall it) Do Not Abuse warez (Unless it is microsoft products we all know they are over priced hehe)

I'm a little curious. How can you tell if Diskeeper is honoring the file placment done by the OS?

Time, consistant use, the speed it completes, that's my body of evidence. I've tried Speed Disk... the disk activity after using it and the ammount of fragmentation that occurs as XP works to set itself right again. These are my 'user' observations... I have no idea how to check the technical details... my proof is in diskeeper's performance.

Isn't Diskeeper just a buffed up copy of XP's own built-in defragger?

I like Diskeeper.

I think Microsoft has Diskeeper make the built-in defraggers for their OSs.

Sure. Evaluation copies of PerfectDisk can be downloaded from http://www.raxco.com.

I've had several customers use PerfectDisk's FindFile feature to located some of the files specified in the layout.ini and see where they are on the partition. After running some other defrag products (I won't mention names), they again used PerfectDisk's FindFile to see if these files had "moved" to somewhere else and their observations have surprised them :)

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
