Ok, I've decided to create an offical tweak on using the traditional login screen but keep the XP look (User pic on Start Menu, Graphical Shut down prompt, etc).
This tweak clears the value of UIHost under [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon] which is responsible for setting the welcome screen theme.
So instead of:
You will now get:
And you will be able to keep:
and
I have created two registry files to accomplish this, one to apply it and one to undo it.
XP Login Tweak.reg - this file clears the UIHost entry and enables the welcome screen through the registry (The welcome screen must be enabled to get the XP Look).
Undo XP Login Tweak.reg - this files restores the value to UIHost (which is loginui.exe) and enables the Welcome Screen (since the average user uses the welcome screen).
