directx shutdown

Recently upgraded to XP from 2k. System- AthalonAMD 1G, via 4 in1, 128MB. Many games not working. Have used the directx diagnostics. On the 3rd diagnostic test on directdraw, and on the first test of 3D, the screen goes blank(black) and acts as if the computers been switched off. Pressing the reset is the only way out. Have downloaded all latest MS updates, graphics driver update (ATI Rage 128 pro), via chipset update. And still it does the same.

Any ideas gratefully received.

i used 2 get exactly the same however it never affected my games?
