digital video editing: panasonic

Can anyone suggest a good editing software package for downloading my home digital camera footage to my PC, so that I can edit about 9hrs of footage down to a reasonable length.

I have looked around and Pinnacle, seem to be the main manufacturer?

my camera is a Panasonic DX NV55 with DVout but no in so I'm presuming I wont be able to resave my edited footage back to dv tape which is a bummer! unless someone knows better.

I have only limited exp with this, but would like to get to know more about it.

Any hobby enthusiasts out there can help give advice??
