While my new system is coming in in a few days, I let a friend use my computer for a moment. I don't know what he did, but somehow, he infected my system badly and I can't figure out what to do from here to prolong my system a bit more before just kicking it in the bucket (I want to transfer a few things off).

Here is what I know:
I removed (Or I think I removed) 3 things that weren't on my system before... something like a videoactivex component???? whatever... and then there was this System Alerter that said it was on my computer since November but yet I know that it wasn't there. And it tried installing the Spydawn product and whatever. It kept giving me a popup every few min about how my system is possibly infected and I should download a recommended remover and all.

The Actions I've taken:
I ran Kaspersky Anti-Virus, I ran Ad-Aware SE Personal, got rid of the spyware I think... reguardless... I'm hoping this fully took it out. I temporarily took it off the net so I'm hoping it helps until I get a response from here.

I mean I don't want it thrown out with a "bang" of getting something weird. But for some reason, I am thinking it reminded me of something that was posted here about a flaw that was made a while back on windows involving ActiveX or something and that it usually was a straight bust... but I didn't get the symptom that I recall from the video of it (The one where it says that I have malware/spyware and it shows it on my desktop), so I think its something different. Is there anything else I should check to make my system somewhat cured?

Thanks!

- Did you delete the contents of all temp folders and Internet files (including ActiveX controls from Downloaded Program Files).
- Run Windows Defender.
- Post a HJT log (http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/index.php).

1. Did that.
2. Don't know anything bout that
3. Just did it... here you go:

zapoqx you have a lot of unneeded services running that might be one reason your pc is running funky . as for Windows Defender its a tool / av from Microsoft it will scan your pc for viruses / spyware . Have you tried running System Restore to previous working state?

You're running both Norton (AntiVirus or Internet Security) and Kaspersky?

You should look into the following. None of these mean anything to me (meaning I don't recognize them).

running multiple A/V and F/W conflicts each other i believe . just use one type of a/v and or f/w kapersky is very good a/v id keep that . Also whats up w/ all these Free Download stuff?

I can't. System Restore refused to work long ago like... 6+ months ago.

I just went through the Windows Defender... and it found nothing.

Edit... No I'm only running Kaspersky... I have norton system works without the anti-virus.... anything wrong with that?

Code:

These are download managers except for the last one. One won't work at all and even though I removed it as much as possible, its still there and it would keep telling me that the dll was in use. I never bothered with it.
The Last one is my TV Software for my TV Tuner.

is that all?

This is a bad one, google for removal: SSODL: eitheror
Its spyware popup.

That's the only one I found.

PS You really do have a lot of crap in there. Be kind to your new system and avoid all taht junkware.

PPS Anything Norton is bad, but that's personal preference (of many OSNN members).

Go to start up manager and disable all that stuff, you really dont need it running until you decide to run it. It should speed up your boot.

Well thanks for the help. Its been almost 2 hours since my post and it has worked actually a bit faster with the removal of the spyware thing. And yes, I will be taking more care of my new system. Its just alot of the startup stuff, I tend to use immediatly (The G15 LCD manager, Kaspersky, Logitech Mouse, WinFast, the mixer to control my sound, my printer and objectdock).

Since it seems as JenD says norton is bad, what would you say is a good alternative for the:
WinDoctor
Speed Disk

And the Disk Doctor, would you say stay with Windows Disk Doctor or what?

Ya I remember the article, but I thought it was applied to 2006 on up? I have 2005 so if its in there, well dam.

Registry Cleaner: CCleaner, RegSupreme
Disk Defrag: Diskeeper

Symantec Corp. Antivirus is awesome but the Norton lineup is bad, bad news.

To keep startup items minimal disable automatic update checking for Java (JRE) and Logitech programs. Check for those updates on your own.

Alright thanks for the heads up. I'll be sure to do that with the new computer.

Oh and with the services, do be careful which services u take out, some (logically) will completely make ur system standard, with no internet, no "designs" just keep that in mind
im sure u prolly already know that :x

oh yeah, and norton... just really pointless, i actually think it was made to take care of "popular" viruses, not the lower type that piss you off from anoyance, the only thing i like about it is its firewall, but then again, i prefer kaspersky anti-hacker for that... so norton is really poinless
