Desktop composition problem?

Still using beta version here. Having a problem with the desktop after turning off all visual enhancements. When I turn them back on, vista has lost the capability to show opaque windows, also the flip 3d no longer works. I think it's got something to do with the desktop composition function, but how do I access this function to enable it?
 
Click Start. Type in services.msc
Look for "Desktop Window Manager Session Manager" - make sure it's set to Automatic, and that it's started.

If it's already started, right-click the Desktop, select Personalize. Click Window Color and Appearance, then click the "Open classic appearance properties..." link. Make sure "Windows Aero" is selected as the color scheme.
 
oh... Windows Aero option is missing from the list.
that's weird. how do i get it back?
