crossover setup for 2 XP boxes?

Hi. Sorry I'm clueless about networking and stuff. Somehow I managed to set up a crossover cable connection between two XP boxes but now it broke for no apparent reason. I have the main box set up as 192.168.0.1 and the 2nd as .2, with 255.255.255.0 as subnet mask and gateways set up as either empty of each computer pointing to another (the latter worked afair, now it doesn't). Yesterday the main box told me it cannot access the mapped network drive.
Boxes cannto ping each other, even though in tcp monitors/by traffic you can see echo requests are coming but aren't returned. I tried shutting down the firewall on main box, the 2nd one doesn't have any firewall, Windows firewall is disabled on both.

If there's no ideas on how to fix this from existing state, can someone tell me some kind of standard setup for two computers ocnnected via crossover cable, from the start, so that I could reproduce it?

Here's ipconfig all (first connection is DSL and it's working):

Windows IP Configuration

Try this:

Go in under the NIC properties
TCP-IP properties
Advanced
WINS
Check that "activate NETBIOS over TCP/IP" is enabled
On both comps.. for only the internal interfaces (i.e. not for the one that goes from the XP machine to your cable modem)

I want to really stress that NetBIOS over TCP/IP should NOT be enabled on the connection that goes to the internet...

Wow, thanks, it helped. I wonder why did it work without it before tho and then stopped...

Not sure, but I've seen it happen a couple of times before...you just have to exercise the XP demon every now and then... :p Anyways, I'm glad I could help... :)

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
