Crackly Sound

I have a mate who had just formatted his comp and reinstalled his o/s. Since he has done this the sound that it produces is so crackly and broken taht you cant bear to listen to it, it seems to happen when you open up aplications or try to make the machine do anything. Is this a driver issue? It comes up as a sound max card when windows detects it but in the manual it states that it is a Via AC'97 card!?!? Any thoughts would be appreciated as always!

:)

I had a similar problem recently when rebuilding a friend's PC with a Gigabyte motherboard that had onboard sound. Windows deteceted it as a soundblaster but I knew it wasn't.

He had no original driver disks so i went to www.gigabyte.com and downloaded the drivers for his mobo.

After this it worked fine.

If he uses the drivers from the mobo disk he gets no sound at all!!! Its an MSi mobo, very weird, didnt do it under win 98se though!?!

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
