Hi...I'm currently in the middle of building my new movie/gaming forum. I was wondering - Would I be breaking any copyright laws if I put up movie/cinema trailers on it? (not links to them, actually hosted in my forum)

Thanks...all help appreciated.

Colin :)

possibly, why not just link to off-site places such as apple trailers site.

Yeah....I was thinking that but most of the time they eventually die...this way if I hosted them myself I'd have more control over them.

Why would you want to show trailers of old films tho?

Well not everyone has seen every movie ever made. There's bound to be one or two they've missed over the months or years. This way they can watch the trailer then decide if they'd like to buy or rent the DVD.

well, in that case i would do some indepth investigating if your wanting to archive trailers. Email the companies and ask directly if you can use "xxxxxxxxx" trailers. There is usually a PR email on company sites.

well even if u were, i dont think they would care, as its just a trailer and they would like as many people as possible to see it and at the same time they save bandwidth. so they wouldnt do anything about it even if it was illegal i think.

I agree....it is only a trailer after all.

Trailers are there for one reason: Get as many people as possible to part with their cash :) You are not likely to get sued for encouraging that :)

They care.

Get written permission to rehost the trailers. They will have you sign a liscensing agreement if they agree. The agreement will stipulate terms and conditions under which you are liscenced to host their intellectual property. Stuff like: you are not allowed to alter it in any way. That could include not recompressing it or changing file format, or editing it for content, etc.

They are paranoid and getting more so.

One company was sued for offering movies that had the objectionable content (sex, vioolence, all the good stuff) removed. They were paying all the royalties but the studios said if they wanted the good stuff removed they would have done it themselves.

LeeJend thats a waste of time. Just host the things and be happy. The studios will be. It's a TRAILER its sole purpose is to spread and encourage sales. You WILL NOT BE SUED for doing that. Period.

My hosting company just said it was a definate NO!...so I'll need to rethink my plans or find a host that would allow me to do this.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
