will vdub open an mpeg ?
get mpeg2avi from doom9.org then open that avi in either vdub or nandub.

Also supports VCD to AVI, DV to AVI, ASF to AVI, SMR to AVI, ,WMV to AVI, MPEG1 to AVI, DV to DivX, ASF to DivX, SMR to DivX, ,WMV to DivX and MPEG1 to DivX all instuctions here http://www.vcdhelp.com/avi2divx.htm any more info i will have to look a little more harder for you :--)
