In the past two weeks of the 7 months I have had this computer, I have been experiencing total loss of response of this computer. It happens randomly, its just freezes, loss of sound, keyboard and mouse are dead, nothing moves or blinks, there is zero hard drive activity. Doesnt seem to matter how long the computer has been on for or what is running

Specs:

P4 3.0GHz with HT disabled
Intel 915G mainboard
512MB of DDR400
80GB SATA hard drive (master)
250GB IDE hard drive (slave)
400W PSU
using on board audio and graphics
WinXP with SP2

I have ran Windows OneCare, Windows Defender, Adaware, Spybot Search And Destroy, defragmented, scan disc-ed and no errors have appeared. It can happen with MSN and firefox just running or with Paintshop, MSN, firefox, foobar, WMP, HydraIRC, IE and a bunch of open folders all running
.

Is there any solution to this!?

The HiJackThis log looks clean.

Have you updated your drivers?
Possibly try a reinstall of windows?
Checked the Event Viewer (Start>Run>eventvwr.msc>enter)?

Seeing as it has only been a couple of weeks you could also try doing a 'system restore' & see if that gets it right.

I removed all the entries from the Even Viewer and it froze again not long after :dead: and this is what has been logged:

I havent installed anything for a while apart from Pando about a month ago.

The hijackthis and event viewer activity looks clean, I would suspect a fading power supply myself. Do you have access to another for testing?

Especially if there is no response from the hardware, or HD activity, that would make sense to me. I don't really think that re-installing Windows or doing a system restore would have an effect, but that's just my .02

CPU temperature is 56*C and the case temperature is about 23*C

I dont have a floppy drive to try memtest86 and all the ISO's are blank?

Might be the power supply:cry:

Those temps are fine, I still say try to get another PSU to try out.

My wife had intermittent problems with her computer and I swapped out the PSU, the optical drives (when I had problems reinstalling windows) and I finally tried a stick of my memory in her machine. That fixed the problem.

So try swapping the PSU or the memory.

Memory
sisoft sandra lite has a memory burn in feature. Download it (majorgeeks.com) and run a memory burn in. See if it crashes. If it does you can try relaxing the memory timings in bios. usually in the range 2-2-2-7 up to 3-2-2-11. Increase the first and last digit one setting. that takes the pressure off the memory and re-run burn in. If it still has errors and you have 2 sticks take out one stick at a time and put the other stick in slot 0. Run the burn in. This way you can isoalte which stiock is bad and find out if one is good enough to run on while you look for an inexpensive replacement stick(s).

Power Supply
Take out unnecessary loads (optical drive, 2nd HD, case lites, extra fans) to reduce the load on the PSU and see if crashes stop or become less frequent. If they do you have a PSU issue.

Post the amperage ratings on the power supply (3.3, +5, 12v1 and 12v2 rails.
400W should be good enough for your system but not all pwoer supplies are creaetd equal...

Check that the power supply has the correct conector for your MB. Latest is 24 pin MB connector with 2 12V rails instead of 1. If your MB has the 24 pin socket and the PSU onlyhas a 20 pin plug it will work for a while but be proben to reboots or lock up. If you used an older PSU with a newer MB or video card it probably is not robust enough. See my Power Supply post it's sticky'd in general hardware.

You could also have a problem with the wall power. Are appliances or airconditioners kicking on about the same time as the freeze? Do the lights flicker when the PC freezes? If yes, try moving the computer to another outlet. If no other electronics in the house dies or locks up it could be the PC PSU is just not stout enough for your system and power surges from other equipment are causing the volateg to dropout of specification.

I prefer BartPE myself. All those tools can be added if desired.

I have the same problem, (my windows xp box freezing...mouse stops moving...no keyboard functions...no error logs).

Couple of Questions...
  1. Did it start when you installed one care or firefox?
  2. Does it only happen when firefox is open?
For some reason Windows One Care Freezes my computer with Mozilla Firefox running. It seems to happen when Firefox loads up complex pages. So I am using Internet Explorer for the time being until I figure out what exactly I want to do. And Since I switched back, my computer stoped freezing.

Sounds like something is spiking your memory usage. it could be the onecare real time scan. Or it can be hardware. try to run a mem test and see what that says.

KC, I am bartpe fan myself. It is more convenient than ultimatebootcd for the simple fact that you don't have 600 things you won't use.

Firefox works great with the real time scan off, but once it is turned back on, thats when it freezes.

We all know that firefox and memory don't get along too well, so I believe that it is just the combination of firefox and one-care put togeather in certain situations.

That is the problem with a lot of real time scan programs and any other program. The ones that use more resources tend to do more lagging though, like firefox for example.

Same problem here, only started to happen after installing Onecare 1.5 beta (previously has Norton Internet 2005).

Firefox now freezes randomly and requires a system restart by holding in the power button. So did the problem only start to happen after OneCare was installed?

Norton resisst being removed. In the process of trying ot hang on it makes your system unstable.

There are other threads on the forum (I forget where) about completely removing Norton. If you can't find them post back and someone will dig them up. I believe the detailed removal instructions are on the Norton site also.

I recently got as new laptop pre-installed with Symantec - uninstall from Add/Remove programs was not enough, but a regedit and delete on everything found with "Symantec" as the search parameter did the trick :)

i found the norton removal tool to be good:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

it's just unusual with the system freezes. i haven't experience them since windows 98. the dev guys at firefox tell me it can't be firefox as it is not possible for it to freeze up a system. and the microsoft onecare dev guys say i should remove firefox and use ie7 and see if the problem persists.

anyway at the moment i find myself using firefox as little as possible or if i do i only use it. so if it freezes the system again i don't lose any work.

also doing a few searchs on forums and google pop-up a few other people with the same issues so at least i'm not alone.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?

Impressed you have kept this alive this long EP! So many sites have come and gone. :(

Just did some crude math and I apparently joined almost 18yrs ago, how is that possible???
