Ok pardon my ingorance but I was wondering if the chipset on the board matters with what video card you use

here http://forum.osnn.net/showthread.php?t=81778 it seems that he is using a nvidia nforce 4 with an ATI vid card, does those two items work together? (I assume they do since you a bunch of people said its fine) but if anyone can explain how it all works and if its just more benefical for your gpu to match the northbridge. Info please :lick:

thanks!

You shouldn't have an issues with the buses travelling through the northbridge.

If you are looking to go cross-fire, yes, you will have issues. However if you are just looking to use the pci-e port, you will have no problems for a single card.

All the pci-e ports are designed to specification. The second one is where you will potentially have issues.

Ideally it is preferable to get the same chipset as the ihv that makes the gpu, but this is typically accurate for multi-gpu expansion in the future, if you choose to go that way.

Doubt I will, but I might feel safer just getting a crossfire 3200 board.

Thanks for the support

I have experience with a board having an nforce chipset that is supposed to be crossfire capable. Although I only had one video card I had nothing but trouble with it.

ATI requires an ATI chipset to run crossfire. It is a proprietary interface the same as Nvidia does with SLI. If you want dual graphics cards then you are stuck with the same MB chipset maker as GPU maker.

The sinlge graphic board interface will allow any combo of MB and GPU chispet.

The situation I'm not sure about is the new Dual GPU SLI on one nvidia board, the 7950. I have not seen if anyone tried to use that on an ATI chipset MB.

If you plan on possibly going SLI or Crossfire buy your MB appropriately now.

Also the ATI line up is getting complicated R200 (old stuff), R3200 is last years chipset the RD482 is the latest and RD850 is on it's way.

Nvidia has been out a while and it's chipsets are more mature.

Any of the SP crew still out there?
