Common Tasks in Folders - System Tasks

A friend of mine called me up about his laptop running XP Pro, he somehow got the side bar of folders(the one that syas system tasks, other places, and details in it like a preview pane) showing up on his desktop. He asked me how to get rid of it, and i can't figure out how he got it there to begin with. Anyone have any ideas how it got there or how i can get rid of it?
Its probably some stupid little hidden option that i have to uncheck somewhere thats going to make me feel really really dumb afterwards.
Thanks to everybody in advance for any suggestions that you make.

is your friend using Ontracks Reg Cleaner by any chance ???

if so > I highly recommend he doesn't use it again

deleting anything from the registry can be a risky business

I'm not sure if he's using any kind of reg cleaner (but if he is I'm gonna tell him to switch to JV16 PowerTools).
