clicking link on irc search engine crashes IE

I've had this problem only the past few days. It seems to have started after installing SP2, but that may be unrelated.

going to any search engine like ircspy, packetnews, etc and clicking the link used to bring up mIRC, connect me to the channel and i could just paste to download a file. now everytime I click the link it doesn't open up mIRC and just crashes IE. Anyone have ideas?
