Checking Progress & Programs

I am just out right now at a friends place and was wishing I could check my download right now.

I was wondering if there is some way that I could check from anywhere my downloads in firefox, downloads in utorrent, things like that?

Is this possible?

Remote desktop type utilities, but software would need to be on the machine you were checking with. Or you could carry one of those S3 type thumb drives that let you execute some programs off the thumb drive.
