Check Email in Outlook XP

Hi, I just got Office XP and I was wondering how, if possible, can I have Outlook check for new emails even when outlook isnt open. I tested it out with the 'when offline, check every X mins' but then sent myself an email and it didnt say in my system tray that I had new email. I was wondering how I could have that little mail icon say I have mail even if outlook isnt open. THanks

i use the program called mailbell. It works perfect, but it isnt free
