Hi Guys,

If I was to move from 9600Pro to 9800, I would assume that the Radeon drivers that I have already installed would not skip a beat upon reboot. Only the Device Manager would be updated with the hardware. Am I correct in assuming this?

Thanks in advance,

Heeter

You are assuming correctly.

There are a few other things that will need a change but overall you should theoretically be able to drop it in and use it out the box.

Now to get the best performance and ease of mind, a format is recommended, but not necessary.

Thanks Sazar,

I think I will be going the format route next weekend. I sold the 9600Pro and the buyer wants the card right away.

I don't think I would even bother with a format. Your not changing anything but the hardware/speed of the card. Will be using same drivers and everything.

I had to uninstall my 9500 PRO and reinstall for the 9800 PRO when I upgraded.

In my experience, this isn't necessary in a case like this. I've gone from one gen (nVidia card for instance, to another) without a hitch. Now, change manufacturer, that's a dif story...

You might want to reinstall the driver (and if it makes you feel comfortable do a remove on the old). That said, it's the same driver, and the only thing the installer might do is change a coupla registry values or something, for your new card. The driver files themselves shouldn't change...

Thanks Son Goku,

I am using the latest Omega Radeon drivers. Have used Omega for the last couple of years with no dilemmas.

Perhaps a image pre-card-change is all. I've changed from nVidea to ATI and just cleaned out drivers between and all worked as it should w/out a format.

Hey Guys,

I did it. It didn't skip a beat at all. Thanks to all.

Now to flash it a "Pro" series and overclock the snot out of it............

Good luck o/cing the thing.

Well the main prob I ran into changing from one gfx card company to another (between 3dfx and nVidia seemed the worst, back in the day) was that the driver files it left behind, if one went to delete them, the win2k "protected file system" would keep restoring the file. OK, one can go into safe mode, and then delete the files out of the DLL cache *and* the actual directory... Other trick (though I finally did it one fell swoop) was forcing the thing to use default VGA mode when it "detected new hardware" :D

I think the other's were registry conflicts. Playing Unreal (it might have been) with a red sky and green faces was pretty whacky. As were some of the really wierd (and totally inconsistent) benchmark results I was getting

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
