CD-ROM Drive

Hey...

I have 2 CD drives on my comp, a Mitsumi 52x CD-ROM, and an Acer/ATAPI 24x/10x/40x CD-RW drive. My CD-RW seems to be running fine, but my CD-ROM isn't working. The drive shows up in My Computer, and under the device manager just fine, but when I place a CD into the drive, no auto-play, or I click on the drive name, and it asks to insert a CD. I have tried many things, including uninstalling the drive, and allowing XP to try to find the drivers for it an re-install it automatically when rebooted. The drive is a Mitsumi CD-ROM FX4830T!B. Any help getting this drive back up and running would be appreciated.

Sounds like the CD-Rom is being picked up by Windows so that possibly isn't the problem. How old is the CD-Rom? Could be the laser. Have you tried a variety of disks?

Are you trying to read a CDRW in your CDROM?

i've tried a variety of disks, burnt, regular, everything in general

Hipster Doofus may be right. The laser lens could be dirty. There are laser lens cleaners available just about anywhere CD's are sold. Fairly inexpensive. Someone else might have another idea what the problem may be. Check back.

ok, i guess i can try that, interesting thing i just noticed. i put a CD into the drive, and try to run it and all, the drive opens and closes fine, but not a single little light on the activity light, nada, nothing, zippo, zilch. any suggestions there?

The drive may be going bad. How old is it?

its about 3 months old

Looks like it might have to go back to the shop. Make sure first though that the leads have not come loose. Even a micron (whatever that is) will stop it working properly.
