When I try to format a floppy disc nothing happens? Ive not had need for my floppy disc for quite a while but I want to boot from it to try memtest and cant. Anyone have any Ideas? It reads a disc fine, ive got disc keep 8 installed could it be that??

How are you trying to format? Through Windows or through command line? Also, what do you mean nothing happens, either you type the command (cmd line) or click OK (Windows) and just nothing responds?

From windows, it just closes the drop down and highlights what the cursor is now over??

I just tried to format from the cmd line to, got this error (The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). click ok to terminate the applictation.

Sounds like you have some oddities going on with your machine, do you have the latest Windows and AV updates applied?

Is the floppy write protected? Check the tab on the disk itself. This more than likely isn't the cause, because you would be getting different errors, but something else to look at.

Also, try the following...

  • Reboot
  • Run a "chkdsk /f" on all hard drives
  • can you do it in safe mode? Something might be conflicting within Windows...
What OS are you running?

If I click on properties for any drive I cant error check that drive, I can defrag only. Im thinking windows might be nackered. Maybe i need to reinstall but thats a dam headache on its own.

Sounds like you might have lost administrative access, if that is the case you won't be able to format.

Take the side of the case off & make sure the floppy cables are seated correctly.

Going by what he said before, in the fact he can read disks, I don't see that being the issue.

If the light on the drive is constantly on then its not plugged in correctly.

Yeah, true, but I didn't see him stating that anywhere. Man, I haven't touched these in awhile, but if the light is constantly on doesn't that mean the FDD cable is backwards?

I've never seen this one before... You're getting an access violation from the format utility when trying to format a floppy Does sound like your install is messed up. What OS is this? Perhaps one of us can send up a copy of the format from our comp, and you can try using that, rather then your own copy (to see if it helps). Can't say it will, and a new Windows install might be necessary.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
