Cannot install WinXP onto this hardware

its good sometimes to do a full erase to re-magnify (is that even a word?) the disk sections that are rarely if ever used.
It's called fdisk /mbr and then format c: then chkdsk c: /f
I have had that work wonders for those kind of problems. And it is not remagnatizing anything. Just fixing and restructuring.
 
I didn't have a chance to try any of this out.

But in talking with the new owner, he hasn't had any issues with the ubuntu install, and his family is getting used to it.

no its called zero fill - what you have described isn't the same thing :)
 
yup but its necessary to keep the disk surface magentised correctly.
