Can I talk to people I know in KaZaA

Is there any way I can talk to a friend on Kazaa..
or view there files like you could on Napster..!!!
 
The only thing is that they have to have the same version of KaZaA and they also have to have IM turned on as well.
 
it would be easier to just install icq or some other messaging program or use windows messenger
