Broadband Sharing

After using Broadband on a friends PC I thought it was time I too changed my slow dial-up connection. What I wanted to know is:

Is it possible to share the connection via a 10mb hub? If I stick my cable modem direct into the hub will this allow the 3 PC’s in my house all connect to the Internet, and at the same time? Or will I have to purchase an expensive router?

I thank you in advance for your help.

Depends what broadband you getting, you should be ok if you get cable with that hub, but with dsl itsw a bit trickier, you would need a router or a switch. For dsl, I have my computer as a server, with 2 nic cards. The modem into my computer then out from the 2nd nic to the router then to 2 other remte systems.

If your ISP provides additional IPs (usually for more $$$ per month) the hub will work. If they don't, you will need the router.

dsl might not require a router or switch, it depends on what you want to do.

until a short time ago I was using exactly that type of setup. I had one machine connected to my ISP through the hub, and functioning as a very simple proxy (I used Proxyi, a freeware app from Analogx, my cat could configure it). Since 2K and XP by default allow an external and internal address on your net interface, I did not even need a second NIC in the proxy box.

There were limitations, though: I could browse the web and check my e-mail from the second PC, but I did have to do some extra configuration for FTP to work, and something like UDP was out of the question without a more sophisticated setup, or a router as others suggested. Also, it would not be considered ideal in terms of security.

Currently I do use a router, and it is a superior configuration, that I agree with completely. Now both machines are equally capable in ALL functions. I now have two PC's going into the hub, then the hub to the router's internal interface (NIC1), then the router's external interface (NIC2) going to the DSL modem (and the leg bone connected to the knee bone!).

If you have an older PC laying around, say a P90 with 32 MB of RAM, and 2 NICS, you can use this. This software will configure a router for you, and it will not even require a hard drive or CD to be installed, the whole thing fits on a floppy.

If you have the money, though, it is true that a little hardware router from Linksys or D-Link or others is a great solution. They usually run about 100 dollars give or take (mainly *take* in the US, they are very cheap).

*bootsy* the second NIC in your main box is only necessary because it's a server on your internal LAN right? That part I'm not too sure about, but I'm interested in eventually having a setup like that myself. As an alternative, could I not use a hub combined with a router as I have now?

I love this stuff!

well i have the modem going into my 1st NIC, then use my 2nd NIC to go out to the router. Lemme guess...on the 2nd pc, you can't access some internet sites right? thats what happened to me when i had a hub. I couldnt check mail in yahoo thru a remote computer for example.

actually, now that you mention it, when i used to just have the hub, i would get the occasional timeout for Hotmail, but otherwise browsing was fine. The Proxyi app was pretty good (i wouldn't trust Internet Connection Sharing at all). But you guys are right in that I definitely have a better time with the router!

I see the difference now. I don't need the 2nd NIC cuz I have a router AND a hub. Either works fine of course, except I had to cough up the dough for a hub...NIC woulda been cheaper...

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
