is there a program out there that blocks spyware? I know theres programs to scan for it and delete it off your computer but I want something to block it from even getting in. is there something like that?

I agree with Net,,,Microsoft AntiSpyware works very well.

Also recommend SpywareBlaster 3.4

Download page

main features include:
- Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
- Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
- Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.

Also Spybot S&D 1.4

it also has a realtime monitor "teatimer"

Download link

Ah yes, I knew I was missing one, but I forgot the name. SpywareBlaster it is. Haven't used it myself. Heard it does a good job though. :)

Also:

Zonealarm PRO (paid, free trial I think) has a spyware blocker.
Adaware SE Pro (paid, free trial I think) has ad-watch blocker.
Stopzilla (paid, free to try)

How about trying them all and letting us know which one is best? :)

Okay, so somewhere from this site I found a link for Spyware Doctor. My laptop was having some MAJOR resource usage issues, so I figured it must have been spyware after looking at all the UROs (unidentified running objects) in my task manager. Spy Doctor does a free scan of my laptop and identifies 146 items that Adaware didn't catch. Oh....so you want to get RID of them?... WELL, you gotta BUY the program for THAT! Well, I gotta have a program anywho, so I pay the $29, and while I'm downloading the authorized program, I get THREE TROJAN ALERTS from my MacAfee Virus program... Gee... Do you think I should be concerned about this?...:crosseyed:

I think the best program out there (free anyways) is Microsoft Anti-Spyware. I have read review after review on spyware apps, and believe it or not Microsoft's Application has about an 88% successful removal rate. I know that sounds like it might be low, but others were even lower...

I believe the only application that was higher than this was something called Sunbelt Counterspy http://www.sunbelt-software.com/CounterSpy.cfm

I tried it myself, wasn't a fan. Also not free, and it caught alot of false positives.

I personally think that educating users of the computer itself yields better results.

firstly dump Internet Exploiter

firefox 1.04 - http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
adblock - http://adblock.mozdev.org/
filterset g for adblock - http://www.pierceive.com/
spyware blaster 3.4 - http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

i also run the NOSCRIPT plugin, which lets you whitelist sites u need java on
https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=722&application=firefox

using that config is much safer and secure than any IE6 & realtime monitors..

most of all with virus's and spyware its all down to good old common sense.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON SPYWARE PROGRAMS.

The main freebies, AdAware and Spybot do as good if not better jobs than the commercial software, which are usually just a rip off of the two aforementioned programs.

I have always used IE and always will. Never had a problem with any types of spyware. All be it FireFox is a safer solution, IE isn't that bad. If you are really concerned, just turn off ActiveX controls

The problem isn't just ActiveX scripting on IE, but all scripting because of its integration into the OS. The only truely safe way to use IE is to disable all scripting. I still think it is foolish to use IE for anything other than WindowsUpdate and OfficeUpdate.

the problem with the microsoft real time monitor is I don't think it monitors cookies

spybot has a real time monitor that does an excellant job, adaware has it aslo but you have to pay for it

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
