Which is the best and easiest IRC client to use?

I am VERY new to it, be nice!

Thanks

mIRC
  • NOT Free (30-day trial)
  • The most exploited client out there (un-secure)
  • Easy to use
  • Hasn't updated in quite a while
  • basic display
  • http://www.mirc.com

X-Chat
  • Open source, 100% free
  • Multi-platform (install linux? dont need to change your client!)
  • Easy to use
  • Updates quite often
  • VERY customisable
  • Secure
  • http://www.xchat.org

It probably shows that X-Chat is my personal preference :)

You may also wish to look at
http://hydrairc.sourceforge.net/ (nice! but still in dev stages, uncomplete)
http://www.xircon.com/
http://*****x.org (win32 = buggy as heck)
http://bersirc.com/

heh, damned filter :)
thats http://www.b i t c h x.com (or .org)

very easy to use, but fares better in a unix environment, the Win32 still has issues with window re-sizing.

Personal choice as everything is. I'm currently using mIRC. I've used AcidMax, Invision, Excursion, xChat. The only thing I dind't like about xChat is, you can't tile your windows (channels). I usually have about 8 - 10 channels/windows going at the same time.

i would say Acidmax no questions. it's basically mirc but it has lots of handy scripts to give system details + uptime:

<Henyman> [os] Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 [cpu] 1 Intel Pentium IV @ 1476.3 MHz Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1500MHz x86 Family 15 Model 0 Stepping 10 [memory] 175/256mb [68.36%] [IIIIIIIIIIIII-------] [display] NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 200 (HP) , NVIDIA GeForce2 MX (HP) card(s), Philips Brilliance 107P (107P2) Philips Brilliance 107P (107P2) 800x600x32bpp - 60Hz monitor [sound]
<Henyman> [hdd] [C: 35,455.95mb (29,718.08mb free)] [bios] IntelR - 42302e31 Award Medallion BIOS v6.00PG [connection] Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC RAS Async Adapter Packet Scheduler Miniport
<Henyman> [uptime] 2days 13hrs 27mins 6secs [record uptime] 2days 13hrs 27mins 6secs on May 10 2003 ::acidmax::

Here

lots of handy script
Annoying scripts you mean.
I despise those damned scripts, you know what system you have, you don't need to flood a channel with every single last detail of it if someone asks you what your cpu/main board/graphics is/are.

I know there are options to show seperate stats, but no-one ever uses them, even then the colours are plain annoying.
mIRC scripts are another thing that get to me, whats the point, as I say they're not handy, if you really must use mIRC (and pay for it!) then write your own scripts, it's not difficult.

Teddy, IRC clients are the same as operating systems, and web browsers, try them all and see which suits you the best.
It's just user preference.

As i've blatantly shown, I despise mIRC, and personally use X-Chat and B!tchX every day.
I would recommend you to try bersirc(.com) over mIRC though, as it's virtually the same and free.

does this mean I'll be able to chit chat with you in real time?

Ive only used mIRC and BersIRC, and out of the two prefer Bersirc. It looks so much nicer.

I may experiment with others, getting a bit bored with mirc.
it looks the same as it did 5 years ago.

the latest update/release of the mIRC client was August 16th 2002, the latest X-Chat release was 07th May 2003, thats what you get from open soured stuff .. quality! ;)

I remember mIRC before it was a multi-server client, and yeah, It's still the same today, I really don't like mIRC anymore, I think its a horrid client.

I've used mirc since '96. With a few different scripts of course for more options.

I used it for about 3 years too, When the rooms I were on went idle I used to sit and script loads of stuff for it, before I deleted it my mIRC folder was around 580mb in size.
When I first used x-Chat (on linux) I thought it was a cool client, but when I was using Windows I thought it was a bit wierd, after a while though I found that I liked X-Chat more and more and found mIRC more tiresome and annoying, so I deleted the lot.

see the attached file for mIRC v2.1 and see how much its changed between 1995 and 2003, there's more new features in v6.03 (latest to date), but you can tell it's still the same ol' mIRC

There's so many scripts and addons out there, why bother making the initial file huge like some of the scripts? It's small and over the years it has added some basic features requested by its users. Hell, there's probably more options in plain mirc than there is in most of the other clients out there.

PS. for a decent script for mIRC, check this one out(especially if you are a gamer): http://www.nnscript.de/

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
